APIM 11-002: NextGen/SESAR Equipment Architecture (pdf, 98K)
Goal: Provide technical leadership in the development of standards for new aircraft and major derivatives programs including Airbus A350 and Boeing 787. Work with international air navigation service providers to develop standards for CNS/ATM, including standards for equipment capable of satisfying the Single European Sky initiative and Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B). The SAI Subcommittee investigates the application of new technologies and prepares APIMs where benefits are achievable.
Scope: Broad systems role enables SAI to look at operational objectives, available technologies and potential solutions. SAI will review manufacturer proposals for new systems and equipment, and develop recommendations concerning preferred avionics architecture, desired interfaces and overall systems level engineering. SAI initiatives are aimed at improving flight crew situational awareness through recommendations that promote standards necessary to meet the desires of both airlines and suppliers. Evolving airspace requirements in the United States are expected to use ADS-B to improve routing and increase airspace capacity. The SAI works with the flight operations community to affect these changes.
Benefit: The airline voice is clearly articulated in SAI where airline operational needs are applied to supplier proposals to forge industry consensus. These coordinated development efforts result in airline-preferred solutions for the airlines user community and a broad market for the suppliers. A coordinated approach to CNS/ATM will support planned growth while minimizing the number of equipment changes to meet emerging airspace requirements.
